Virender Sehwag Mocks RCB’s Top Spot in IPL 2025: ‘Let the Poor Stay Above, Take a Photo’

Although it is still early in IPL 2025, it is encouraging to see Royal Challengers Bengaluru occupying the top position with consecutive victories. Currently, there are only two unbeaten teams in the 18th season of the IPL: RCB and the Delhi Capitals (DC), both of which have yet to secure an IPL title. RCB leads the points table due to their impressive net run rate of 2.266. They achieved comfortable wins in their first two matches, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by 7 wickets and overpowering Chennai Super Kings by 50 runs. Traditionally dominant teams, such as MI, CSK, KKR, and RR find themselves among the bottom five. While the dynamics of the tournament can shift dramatically, if RCB can maintain their early momentum, the future remains uncertain.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, however, did not hesitate to poke fun at the Bengaluru franchise, humorously labeling them as "gareeb" (poor) for their lack of IPL victories.

“Let the poor enjoy their time at the top of the IPL standings and take some photos. Who knows how long they will remain there,” Sehwag remarked on Cricbuzz.

He clarified that his comments were not about RCB's financial status but rather their barren trophy cabinet after 17 seasons. “Do you think I was referring to their wealth? No. They are financially prosperous, with franchises earning 400-500 crore each season. My point is about those who have not won a single trophy; I am calling them gareeb,” he explained.

RCB, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals are the only teams that have yet to secure an IPL title, despite participating in every season since the league's establishment in 2008. Among these teams, RCB has come the closest to winning, reaching the finals on three occasions. They also boast the largest fan base, which consistently supports the franchise through both triumphs and challenges.

This season, under the leadership of new captain Rajat Patidar, RCB has made an impressive start. Their bowling attack, which has previously been a source of struggle, has performed exceptionally well. In the opening match of the tournament, Krunal Pandya and Josh Hazlewood combined to take five wickets, limiting KKR to a score of 174/8. Subsequently, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt each scored half-centuries, leading RCB to victory in just 16.2 overs.

In their second match, captain Rajat Patidar scored 51 runs off 32 balls, while Salt (2 runs off 16 balls) once again provided a quick start, helping RCB reach a total of 196/7. Hazlewood (3 wickets for 21 runs) and Yash (2 wickets for 18 runs) effectively contained CSK, restricting them to 146/8 in their 20 overs.
