Virat Kohli's No Penalty Highlights BCCI's Double Standards in Digvesh Rathi Case: 'Not Even a Warning'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faced subtle scrutiny regarding its perceived inconsistency, as former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra suggested that Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Virat Kohli evaded disciplinary action following his overt celebration aimed at Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer.
Kohli's actions were juxtaposed with those of Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi, who incurred fines on two occasions this season for his notebook celebration. Kohli played a pivotal role in the match against Punjab Kings in Chandigarh, achieving a record fourth half-century that contributed to the visitors' seven-wicket victory last Sunday.
Following Jitesh Sharma's winning run, Kohli's aggressive celebration, which included a direct stare at Iyer, quickly gained traction on social media. On his YouTube channel, Chopra questioned the rationale behind Kohli's lack of fines from the BCCI, contrasting it with Rathi's penalties for his notebook celebration. Chopra remarked, 'What struck me was that Digvesh Rathi performed a 'notebook' celebration.
He was fined for it once, and again for a second occurrence. He became apprehensive the third time, realizing that his earnings were not worth the potential fines, leading him to start writing on the ground instead.' He continued, 'In contrast, we witnessed Virat Kohli's celebration at the conclusion of the PBKS-RCB match, which was equally aggressive. Yet, there was no reprimand for him.
No one has addressed this, while Digvesh Rathi faced consequences for his 'notebook' celebration.' Rathi was fined 25 percent and received one demerit point for his first offence on April 1 after dismissing PBKS opener Priyansh Arya. A subsequent offence, following the dismissal of Mumbai Indians' Naman Dhir, resulted in a 50 percent fine and two additional demerit points.
'I recall MS Dhoni was once fined...'
The former KKR player also mentioned that Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was penalized for stepping onto the field and disputing with the umpires. He incurred a fine amounting to 50% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. Chopra noted that Kohli did not face similar consequences.
"I remember MS Dhoni being fined 50% of his match fee for entering the field. His presence was unwarranted. The deduction was significant, and while it could have been more severe, some action was taken. In contrast, Virat Kohli has not experienced the same repercussions," he stated.
