Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket superstar, recently opened up about his struggles with the cover drive, admitting it’s become a bit of a weak spot for him lately, putting him in a tricky situation. He mentioned that when he executes the shot perfectly, it gives him confidence that he’s in control of his innings. Kohli made these remarks after leading India to a solid six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

He scored an impressive unbeaten 100, helping India chase down a target of 242 with 45 balls to spare, showcasing some stunning cover drives along the way.

At 36, Kohli's innings included seven boundaries, and his sharp running between the wickets was a standout feature. This marked his 51st ODI century and 82nd international ton.

“It’s a tricky situation. The cover drive has been a bit of a weakness for me over the years, but I’ve also scored a lot of runs with it,” Kohli shared in a video from BCCI.

“Today, it was all about trusting my shots. The first couple of boundaries I hit were those cover drives on the rise, so I had to take a bit of a risk and really commit to my shots. When I connect with those, I feel in control at the crease. Overall, it was a great personal innings for me, and a fantastic team win,” he added.

'Awesome day for our team'

Kohli, who had been having a tough time scoring runs before the match against Pakistan, really stepped up when it mattered. The former captain has a history of performing well against their biggest rivals, so it was no shock to see him find his form against them.

He was named Player of the Match for his impressive unbeaten score of 100 off 111 balls.

Reflecting on the India-Pakistan clash, Kohli mentioned, "The atmosphere is always more electric when you face Pakistan, especially here, since both sides have a strong fan presence. It was an awesome day for us as a team and for me personally."

During his innings, Kohli also made history by becoming the fastest ODI player to reach 14,000 runs, joining the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara as the only players to achieve this feat.

Kohli shared, "My approach to batting at number three has always been about minimizing risk and ensuring my team is in a winning position. If I can finish the game during a chase, that's even better, and I’ve always liked those situations."

He added, "My role has stayed consistent over the years; I just focus on what the game needs and give it my all."
