Virat Kohli was advised to embrace patience and channel Sachin Tendulkar's legendary SCG performance, stating, "I'm not going to chase...".

After a tough outing in a pink-ball Test in Adelaide, where he faced a twin failure, Virat Kohli has received some advice from Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist. Gilchrist suggests that Kohli should take inspiration from Sachin Tendulkar and adopt a more patient approach. The Aussie bowlers took advantage of Kohli's known weakness outside the off stump, dismissing him cheaply in both innings. Although Kohli showed some restraint early on, he couldn't resist poking at balls outside off stump, leading to his dismissal by Mitchell Starc for just 7 runs, and then he fell to Scott Boland for 11 in the second innings. This recurring issue has become a challenge for Kohli, as he continues to get out in the same way against the pacers.
Gilchrist pointed out that Kohli should look back at Tendulkar's performance at the SCG in 2004, where he set a personal challenge not to play a cover drive. During that match, Australia aimed to get Tendulkar out by tempting him into that shot, but he read the field well and resisted, ultimately scoring 241 runs against a tough bowling attack.
"The real battle isn't just about facing the bowler or the opposition's skills; it's more about what's going on in your head. I'm not saying Virat is losing his mind, but he might need to focus on what Sachin did at the SCG. He could say, 'I'm not going to chase anything outside off stump. You come to me.' It's all about playing the patience game," Gilchrist shared with Cricbuzz.
The Aussie icon believes Kohli can overcome this rough patch, emphasizing that the Indian star has the mental fortitude to bounce back and address this weakness in his game.
"With all the experience he has, he knows he's mentally strong. He's dealt with high expectations since his U-19 days, through the IPL, and has become the icon he is today," Gilchrist added in the same conversation.
Virat Kohli ought to be able to tell himself…
The Indian batting legend hit a century in the second innings at Perth, breaking out of a tough stretch he faced during the home Test season. However, the pink-ball challenge proved to be a bit too challenging for him in Adelaide.
Gilchrist mentioned that this is a chance for Kohli to really test his mental game, which could lead to growth in other areas as well.
"He needs to remind himself to focus on what he can do to help the team, even if it means playing a long, patient game. If you stick around long enough, you’ll have to adapt in different ways, and this could be a great opportunity for Virat to do just that," he added.
