On Tuesday, the Sydney Sixers, a three-time champion of the Big Bash League (BBL), shared a photo of Virat Kohli on social media, extending a warm welcome to the renowned Indian cricketer and Royal Challengers Bangalore star. However, following the tweet's surge in popularity, the BBL team clarified that it was an April Fools' joke, intended for April 1.

The Sydney-based franchise, which boasts prominent Australian players such as Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc, included the caption: “Virat Kohli is officially a Sixer for the next TWO seasons! ✍️”

After some fans of Kohli expressed curiosity about whether the RCB player had truly signed with the Sixers, the team clarified that it was "the 1st of April 2025," revealing that their recent announcement was an April Fools' joke. In reality, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prohibits Indian male cricketers from participating in overseas leagues.

Kohli is set to play on Wednesday when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru face off against Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Currently, RCB leads the IPL 2025 points table with two victories from two matches. They secured a win against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the season opener and followed it up with a 50-run triumph over the Chennai Super Kings in an away match.

The 36-year-old amassed 741 runs in last year's IPL, earning the orange cap as the top scorer. In the two matches of IPL 2025, he has accumulated 90 runs, including an unbeaten 59 against the defending champions, KKR.

‘Imagine Kohli playing for the Sixers’

In 2022, former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee discussed the potential for the Big Bash League (BBL) to transition to a private model, which could allow star players like Virat Kohli to participate in full seasons. As reported by crictoday.com, the iconic bowler remarked, "I am referring to Virat Kohli. Just picture him playing for the Sixers and the attendance that would generate. I have a high regard for the Big Bash; they have performed admirably. However, to elevate the league to the next level, such changes would be necessary."
