Former Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan and Sunil Gavaskar expressed their frustration regarding the celebrity culture prevalent in Indian cricket and the apparent lack of dedication to domestic tournaments, particularly in light of the challenges faced in international matches. Their remarks were specifically aimed at senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who had a disappointing performance during the recent tour of Australia. These comments gained significant traction on social media and caught the attention of BCCI officials, who are reportedly determined to address the issue.

Kohli, aside from his century in the series opener in Perth, was considered one of the major disappointments, accumulating only 190 runs at an average of 23.75 over eight innings. Analysts expressed concern over his recurring weakness against deliveries outside the off stump, as he was dismissed seven times out of eight against this type of bowling, with Scott Boland being particularly effective, claiming Kohli's wicket four times in three matches.

In contrast, Rohit managed a mere 31 runs in five innings, achieving the lowest average for a touring captain in Australia, before he chose to withdraw from the fifth Test.

The underwhelming performances of these two prominent figures in Indian cricket have ignited discussions regarding their future in Test cricket and whether the selectors will consider them for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle starting in late June. However, a report from Dainik Jagran suggested that both Kohli and Rohit are unlikely to retire voluntarily, thus placing the challenging decision in the hands of the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar.

The team officials are expressing their dissatisfaction with the recent loss. As the team navigates a challenging transitional period, they will need to engage in significant self-reflection upon their return home. In response to inquiries regarding this situation, a senior BCCI official mentioned that he had been listening to Gavaskar and Irfan following the match. When questioned about the future of Virat and Rohit, he stated that there are no signs suggesting that either player intends to retire from Test cricket voluntarily. The BCCI is not in a position to request their retirement; however, measures must be taken to enhance the team's performance. Undoubtedly, when the appropriate moment arises, the selectors will make a judicious decision.

The report additionally noted that Devajit Saikia, who is poised to succeed Jay Shah as the new secretary of the BCCI, along with Prabhtej Bhatia, who submitted his application for the treasurer position on Saturday at Wankhede, engaged in a discussion regarding Kohli's recent difficulties with deliveries outside the off stump.

"One official remarked that Kohli has been dismissed in this manner during the last six innings, while another official interjected, stating that this occurrence may have taken place eight times," the report stated.
