Batting virtuoso Virat Kohli was unable to mirror his previous performance against Pakistan during India's Champions Trophy 2025 encounter with New Zealand on Sunday, as he was dismissed for a low score at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Kohli began his innings positively, striking a few boundaries, but was left astonished by an extraordinary catch from Glenn Phillips at point.

Having become the third player to surpass 14,000 runs in One Day Internationals with a century in the match against Pakistan, Kohli faced a challenging day in his 300th game in this format.

In the seventh over, on the fourth delivery, Matt Henry bowled a ball outside the off stump. Kohli found sufficient space to execute a powerful cut shot, but Glenn Phillips, positioned impeccably, made a remarkable one-handed catch in just 0.62 seconds. The brilliance of this catch left Kohli in disbelief. A hush fell over the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, while the New Zealand team erupted in jubilation over securing such a significant wicket. Anushka Sharma, Kohli's wife, who was in attendance, expressed her disappointment by holding her head in her hands.

Phillips has been showcasing remarkable performances on the field during the current Champions Trophy, igniting discussions regarding his status as potentially the finest fielder in the world at present.

In a separate development, Kohli has become the seventh cricketer to achieve the milestone of 300 or more One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record with 463 ODIs, the highest by any player in the history of cricket.

In his 300th ODI, Kohli faced only 14 deliveries before being dismissed, as India suffered a swift collapse, losing their top-order for a mere 30 runs within 6.3 overs. Matt Henry took the wickets of Shubman Gill (2) and Kohli, while Kyle Jamieson dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma for 15 runs.

NZ wins the toss, and  elects to bowl first

India has once again lost the toss, marking the thirteenth consecutive time since the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, which establishes the longest streak in this format.

In their lineup, India made one adjustment from the previous match, replacing pacer Harshit Rana with mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, thereby implementing a four-spinner strategy. Both India and New Zealand have secured their places in the semifinals from Group A. The outcome of today's match will determine the group champion and the subsequent semifinal pairings.
