Virat Kohli Set to Return for 2nd ODI After Knee Swelling Scare

India's vice-captain, Shubman Gill, has alleviated worries regarding Virat Kohli's knee injury, affirming that the prominent batsman will be ready for the second ODI against England in Cuttack on February 9. Kohli was unable to participate in the series opener in Nagpur due to swelling in his right knee, which postponed his eagerly awaited return to the Indian ODI lineup.
The 36-year-old had undergone a late fitness assessment in hopes of playing in the first ODI but was ultimately ruled unfit. In his absence, Shreyas Iyer was included in the playing XI, with Iyer indicating that his selection was a result of Kohli's unavailability following India's victory. Meanwhile, Gill moved up to the No. 3 batting position.
India achieved a four-wicket win, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
In an interview with the official broadcaster after the match, Gill clarified Virat Kohli’s situation, indicating that the injury was minor and not a significant concern.
"When he woke up this morning, he had some swelling in his knee. He was fine during yesterday's practice session. There is no need for concern. He will certainly be fit for the next game," Gill stated.
Kohli’s absence marked one of the rare occasions in which the seasoned batsman missed a match due to injury.
Gill shines at no. 3
In the absence of Kohli, Gill embraced the responsibility of batting in the critical No. 3 position, significantly contributing to India's successful chase. The 25-year-old demonstrated his skill with a steady innings of 87 runs from 95 balls, stabilizing the team after the loss of early wickets.
His elegant strokeplay and strategic mindset allowed India to maintain control throughout the chase.
Gill later expressed that batting at No. 3 was not a drastic change for him, considering his prior experience in that role during Test matches.
"I usually bat at number three in Test matches, so it wasn’t a major adjustment. However, the circumstances can vary. When batting at number three and early wickets fall, it is essential to adapt to the situation. Conversely, if the openers have established a solid partnership, it is important to build on that momentum. My approach was to adapt my batting to the situation and the over in which I entered," Gill stated.
As India aims for a series victory, Kohli’s anticipated return will strengthen the batting order as they prepare for the second ODI in Cuttack on Sunday.
