Senior Indian batter Virat Kohli's shoulder bump on Australia's 19-year-old Sam Konstas didn't go over well with the fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Day 1 of the fourth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The crowd started booing him every time he got close to the boundary. But the 36-year-old had a fierce comeback.

It all went down in the first session on Thursday when Kohli intentionally walked towards Konstas, who was heading to the other end of the pitch, and nudged him with his shoulder. They quickly got into a heated exchange before fellow Aussie opener Usman Khawaja and the on-field umpire stepped in.

The Australian crowd has always had a soft spot for Kohli since his first tour in 2012, and the media celebrated his return as the "king" when he arrived in Perth for what could be his last tour in Australia. However, his move to rattle debutant Konstas with that physical contact didn't sit well with the MCG fans.

During Australia's first innings, Kohli had to dive to save a boundary, causing his sunglasses to fly over the ropes. After tossing the ball to the wicketkeeper, he went back to grab his shades while the crowd continued to boo and jeer at him, which even got a mention in the commentary. In response, the India No. 4 spat out his chewing gum and shot a glare at the crowd.

Kohli hit with a fine for bumping into Konsta

The ICC hit Kohli with a 20 percent fine on his match fee right after Day 1 wrapped up in Melbourne for intentionally bumping shoulders with Konstas. He also received a demerit point for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers "inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or anyone else (including a spectator during an international match)," according to an ICC statement.

The ICC mentioned that there was no need for a formal hearing since Kohli agreed to the penalties suggested by match referee Andy Pycroft.
