Virat Kohli Opts Out of Delhi Captaincy as He Prepares for Ranji Trophy Comeback
3 months ago | 5 Views
Virat Kohli is poised to make his first appearance in domestic cricket since 2012, as the former captain of India is set to participate in Delhi's final Ranji Trophy group match against Railways, commencing on Wednesday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Prior to the match, it was reported that Kohli was offered the captaincy for this game; however, similar to Rishabh Pant, he declined the position, indicating that Ayush Badoni would remain the team's captain.
Given Kohli's reputation as one of the greatest Test captains in history, and statistically the finest from India, his availability for the final group match prompted the offer to lead the domestic team, as noted in a report by the Times of India. The last occasion Kohli captained Delhi was during the Challenger Trophy tournament in September 2013, but he chose to turn down the offer.
In the meantime, Pant, who had a lacklustre return to domestic cricket in Delhi's previous match against Saurashtra, will not participate in the upcoming game against Railways.
“Pant has been engaged in first-class cricket since the Duleep Trophy in September. Over the past three and a half months, he has played 12 first-class matches. With the Champions Trophy approaching, he has been advised to rest in preparation for the white-ball season,” a DDCA official informed the national daily.
Virat Kohli hits the nets at Arun Jaitley Stadium
After completing his training in Alibaug under the supervision of former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar, Kohli rejoined his Delhi teammates on Tuesday. He arrived at the Arun Jaitley Stadium at 9 am, where he participated in a team huddle and engaged in warm-up exercises before playing football with his teammates for approximately 15 minutes.
Kohli, who has faced criticism following his poor performance in the home series against New Zealand and the subsequent tour of Australia, appeared to be at ease among his new teammates. The practice session was overseen by Delhi's head coach, Sarandeep Singh.
