Virat Kohli Opens Up on ‘Ego’ and Mentions Shreyas Iyer in Candid CT Recall

Virat Kohli, the batting maestro of Team India, shared insights into his batting philosophy, emphasizing that he does not aim to outshine his teammates. His primary focus is to assess the match situation and adapt his play accordingly. Over the past decade, Kohli has established himself as a leading figure in white-ball cricket, excelling particularly in the role of an anchor. Known as the 'Chase Master,' he has built an impressive record while batting second, skillfully adjusting his innings to meet the team's requirements and guiding them to victory on numerous occasions.
Kohli elaborated on his batting strategy, explaining that he takes the initiative when he is in good form but also evaluates whether the other batsman is better positioned to take control. He is prepared to step back when necessary. He recalled a moment during the Champions Trophy when he recognized that Shreyas Iyer was in a stronger position to attack, prompting him to adopt a more supportive role, as his goal has always been to uplift his teammates rather than overshadow them.
"Reflecting on recent events, particularly in one of the Champions Trophy matches, Shreyas (Iyer) took the lead. It was never about ego. If I was in rhythm and the game was flowing, I would naturally take charge. However, if someone else was better positioned to lead, they would take that role. It has never been about overshadowing anyone or doubting my own abilities," Kohli stated during his appearance on '18 Calling 18' on JioHotstar.

Kohli is adopting a similar strategy in the current IPL 2025 season. He has taken a step back in leadership, allowing other players like Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar to aggressively target the bowlers from one end. The former RCB captain has commenced this IPL season strongly, accumulating 164 runs in four matches, with an average of 54.66 and a strike rate exceeding 143, including two half-centuries and a top score of 67.
The 36-year-old emphasized that his strategy involves assessing the team's needs in specific situations and adapting his play accordingly.
"It has always been about grasping the game situation—something I take great pride in. I aim to perform in line with what the situation requires," the former RCB captain remarked.
