Virat Kohli Offers Tactical Advice to Rohit Sharma: Field Placement Adjustment in Champions Trophy Final
13 days ago | 5 Views
Virat Kohli was all ears with Rohit Sharma, doing most of the talking while the Indian captain listened closely. This wasn’t the first time Kohli shared his insights with Rohit during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025; he had previously stepped in when Australia’s Steve Smith and Alex Carey were putting up a strong fight in the semi-final. Whenever a dangerous partnership starts to form or the opposing team seems to be gaining momentum, Kohli is quick to jump in. He did just that in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday.
After New Zealand's captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bat, openers Rachin Ravindra and Will Young got off to a great start. India’s new-ball bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya, struggled to contain Ravindra’s aggressive play. Even Varun Chakarvarthy faced a tough time, conceding 10 runs in his first over as New Zealand raced to 46 runs in just 6 overs.
In the 7th over, while Shami was bowling, Kohli noticed something and decided to chat with Rohit to shift the momentum. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what Kohli suggested, but it likely had to do with adjusting the field for Ravindra, who had already hit four fours and a six.
The breakthrough came in the very next over when Chakarvarthy dismissed Young for 15, breaking the partnership. Kohli, known for his passionate celebrations, let out a loud cheer when the umpire signaled the out.
Throughout the match, Kohli was lively and full of energy. Despite a rough day in the field with India dropping four half-chances, he shone in the outfield and even executed a sharp run-out in the 49th over, sending Santner back with a precise throw from the deep.
This all happened after Kohli was seen having another lively chat with Rohit and Shami during the 48th over of the game.
New Zealand scored 251 runs for the loss of 7 wickets
New Zealand managed to score only 251 runs for 7 wickets, thanks to a solid showing from the Indian bowlers, particularly the spinners, who were on point during the final match.
Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer for New Zealand, scoring 63 runs off 101 balls. Meanwhile, Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra, and Glenn Phillips added 53 not out, 37, and 34 runs respectively.
On the Indian side, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy each took two wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Shami chipped in with one wicket each.
