Virat Kohli may have raised concerns regarding his performance following his innings against Bangladesh in India's Champions Trophy opener on Wednesday. However, he silenced critics with a remarkable century against Pakistan on Sunday in Dubai. This marked his 51st career ODI century, achieved off the last ball of the chase, leading India to a six-wicket victory over their long-standing rivals.

As Kohli advanced down the pitch to steer Khushdil Shah's delivery through the covers for a boundary, he removed his helmet, raised his bat, and looked skyward. The 36-year-old then executed the 'calma' celebration, reminiscent of Suryakumar Yadav, while gesturing towards the dressing room, signifying his command over the innings. It is noteworthy that he navigated a challenging target, alongside the aggressive performances of Hardik Pandya and Shaheen Afridi, who bowled several wides, as well as the external speculation surrounding his potential retirement. Thus, Kohli's 'calm down' gesture appeared particularly fitting.

There was speculation regarding whether this gesture was directed at Suryakumar, who was present at the Dubai International Stadium for the match. While many believed this to be the case, a report from the Times of India suggested that Kohli's celebration was intended for his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, who had also traveled to Dubai to witness Kohli's performance. An Instagram post from Suryakumar later indicated that he was seated at a different corner during the gesture, suggesting it was not aimed at him.

'It's about keeping the outside noise away'

Following his receipt of the Player of the Match award, Kohli remarked that he silenced "the noise" in order to achieve an unbeaten century, marking his sixth in an ICC ODI tournament and his first in the Champions Trophy. During this innings, he also became the third player to surpass 14,000 runs in this format.

"My objective was straightforward - to maintain control during the middle overs, avoid taking risks against spinners, and challenge the fast bowlers. I was satisfied with this approach, as it aligns with my style of play in ODIs," Kohli stated. "I possess a solid understanding of my game. It is essential to disregard external distractions, manage my energy levels, and focus my thoughts. I find it easy to become entangled in the expectations and excitement surrounding matches of this nature."
