On Sunday, during the final group-stage match against New Zealand in the 2025 Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium, former India captain Virat Kohli achieved yet another significant milestone in his illustrious career. He became the seventh Indian cricketer to reach 300 One Day International (ODI) appearances, joining the ranks of cricketing legends such as Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni.
Kohli, who made his ODI debut in Dambulla against Sri Lanka, has accumulated a remarkable total of 14,085 runs at an impressive average of 58.20 and a strike rate of 93.41. His career includes 51 centuries and 73 half-centuries, with a highest score of 193. Notably, Kohli's 100th ODI appearance also took place in the Champions Trophy, 12 years ago, against the West Indies, while his 200th match was against New Zealand in 2017.
The first cricketer to achieve the milestone of 300 ODI matches was former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, who reached this landmark in 1998 during a match against Australia. Over the subsequent 27 years, 21 additional cricketers have joined this exclusive group, including the iconic Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record for the most ODI appearances with 463. The last player to enter this elite circle was West Indies great Chris Gayle, who accomplished this feat in 2019 during a match against India.
List of India cricketers to feature in 300 ODIs:
Sachin Tendulkar (1989-2012) - 463 matches
MS Dhoni (2004-2019) - 350 matches
Rahul Dravid (1996-2011) - 344 matches
Mohammad Azharuddin (1985-2000) - 334 matches
Sourav Ganguly (1992-2007) - 311 matches
Yuvraj Singh (2000-2017) - 304 matches
Notably, Virat Kohli stands out among the 21 players listed, as he has achieved the remarkable milestone of participating in 300 One Day Internationals while also having played 100 Test matches and 100 T20 Internationals.
More milestones await Kohli
Following a modest score of 22 off 38 in India's opening match of the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh, which sparked concerns regarding Kohli's performance and future, a highly anticipated resurgence occurred during the critical encounter against arch-rival Pakistan in Dubai last Sunday. He delivered an impressive unbeaten century, scoring 100 runs, contributing to the team's six-wicket victory that ensured India's progression to the semifinals. This achievement marked his 51st career century, his fourth against Pakistan, and his first in the Champions Trophy.
This performance brought Kohli closer to another significant record for India. With a total of 651 runs accumulated in the Champions Trophy over 15 innings, he is now just 51 runs shy of Shikhar Dhawan's record of 701 runs in 10 innings, which stands as the highest for an Indian batter in the ICC tournament. In the overall rankings, Kohli is positioned seventh on the all-time list, which is led by Gayle, who has amassed 791 runs in 17 innings.
