Virat Kohli Hints at Last Test in Australia: Reflects on Disappointing Series
16 days ago | 5 Views
Star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli recently dropped a big hint about his future in international cricket, suggesting that he might not have another tour to Australia left in him. During the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli struggled to find his rhythm after scoring a century in the second innings of the first match in Perth. Throughout the five-match series, he kept getting dismissed in a similar manner, often chasing balls that were well outside off stump.
Bowlers like Scott Boland, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood consistently troubled Kohli, leading to him scoring just 190 runs over 9 innings.
Australia has usually been a place where Kohli shines, and who could forget his remarkable performance in the 2014 Adelaide Test, where he scored centuries in both innings? However, the 2024-25 tour was a different story, as he seemed to be a shadow of his former self.
His stats would have looked even worse if he hadn’t managed to score that century in the second innings of the Perth Test. Speaking at RCB Innovation Labs on Saturday, Kohli mentioned that he has come to terms with what happened during what might be his last tour to Australia.
“If you ask me how disappointed I am... this last tour to Australia is still fresh in my mind, so it feels the most intense. But I can’t dwell on it. I might not have another chance to tour Australia in four years,” Kohli shared.
“I can’t go back and change it. So, I have to accept whatever has happened in my life. Back in 2014 (against England), I still had the opportunity to go in 2018 and perform well. That might not be the case now,” he added.
He mentioned that he’s not ready to make any announcements just yet because he still has a deep passion for the game. “No need to worry. I’m not announcing anything right now. Everything’s good at the moment. I still enjoy playing,” Kohli stated.
India faced a setback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, losing 1-3, which meant they didn’t make it to the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time.
Kohli might miss the opportunity to tour Australia for a Test series again, as the next trip is likely set for the 2028-29 season.
“Once you start dwelling on the disappointment from the outside, it just adds more pressure on yourself. I definitely felt that in Australia. I had a solid score in the first Test and thought, ‘This is it,’” Kohli reflected.
“There was supposed to be another big series for me, but it didn’t go as planned. How do you deal with that? For me, it’s all about acceptance. This is what happened, and I need to be honest with myself,” he added.
India is the top team in the Champions Trophy
Virat Kohli mentioned that India was the top team in the Champions Trophy, so it’s no shock that Rohit Sharma and his team clinched the title without losing a single match in the 2025 tournament featuring eight teams.
India triumphed over New Zealand in the final held at the Dubai International Stadium. Kohli stood out for India, scoring a century against Pakistan and contributing a vital 84 runs off 98 balls in the semi-final against Australia.
Kohli also hinted that he might come out of retirement for T20Is during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Since cricket will be included in the Games, he believes that winning a gold medal would be an incredible experience.
"I’m not sure, but if we’re in the running for a gold medal, I might just play one game, grab that medal, and head back home," Kohli joked.
"But seriously, being Olympic champions would be an amazing achievement. It would be a first, and I’m confident we’ll be in the mix for that," he added.
