One of the initial acts of celebration captured during the live broadcast on Sunday following India's victory in the Champions Trophy was fast bowler Harshit Rana emulating Virat Kohli's famous 'Gangnam Style' dance alongside Arshdeep Singh and Ravindra Jadeja, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Subsequently, Harshit made several requests for Kohli to replicate the dance from the 2013 Champions Trophy celebration in Dubai, but the 36-year-old declined.
Twelve years prior, a youthful Kohli provided fans with an unforgettable moment as he danced to 'Gangnam Style' during the Champions Trophy celebration in England, following the MS Dhoni-led team's narrow five-run victory over the hosts. On Sunday, Rana performed the dance twice: first, immediately after Jadeja secured the winning run on the final ball of the 49th over, and again when the entire Indian team, along with support staff and BCCI members, gathered for a photo with the trophy.
During the second instance, Rana and Arshdeep invited Kohli to join them in the dance. The former captain initially overlooked their request and later declined by folding his hands and covering his ears. Nevertheless, he appeared to enjoy the celebration as the young fast bowlers revelled in the moment.
Kohli, nonetheless, did not let down the fans during the exuberant celebrations at the Dubai International Stadium. Following the victory, he showcased his bhangra skills before engaging in 'dandiya' with captain Rohit Sharma.
'Happy we were able to play as a unit'
Kohli expressed his reflections on the championship victory, highlighting his significant contributions, including a century against Pakistan and a commendable 84 runs in the semifinal against Australia. He emphasized his satisfaction with the team's cohesive performance.
"To secure titles, which we have been striving for in recent times, it is essential for the entire team to elevate their game in various matches. Throughout this tournament, across five games, each player has stepped up at critical moments," he remarked.
"This collective effort is what ultimately led us to triumph in this tournament. Players have delivered remarkable innings and executed impactful bowling spells, demonstrating that a title can only be won through teamwork. I am truly delighted that we managed to function as a cohesive unit and thoroughly enjoy the experience. Our time together as a team has been extraordinary, making this tournament a remarkable journey for us."
