10 days ago | 5 Views
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two prominent figures in the cricketing arena, continue to serve as the foundation of Indian cricket, especially following their recent victory in the Champions Trophy, which has once again brought them into the spotlight. Both players commenced their international careers nearly simultaneously, with just a year separating their debuts; Rohit made his first appearance in 2007, while Kohli joined the national team in 2008.
From 2014 to 2023, both athletes were at the peak of their performance yet remained without ICC titles. However, in the past couple of years, fortunes shifted in their favor as they secured consecutive ICC championships, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Their leadership has been instrumental in advancing Indian cricket, having collaborated closely during Rohit's tenure as Kohli's vice-captain. Kohli, as a senior member of the team, continues to play a significant role within the leadership group. Although there were rumors of a rift between them a few years ago, they consistently expressed mutual respect in public forums. Recently, Kohli and Rohit have demonstrated a strong camaraderie on the field, frequently exchanging insights and celebrating the team's achievements together.
The two cricketing icons are set to compete against each other on Monday in the IPL 2025 match featuring the Mumbai Indians and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
In anticipation of this significant encounter at Wankhede Stadium, Kohli reflected on his relationship with Rohit over the years. The RCB star emphasized that their bond is quite natural, given that they began their careers around the same time and have continually shared valuable insights with one another.
“I believe it’s a very organic development when you play alongside someone for an extended period, exchanging insights about the game, learning from each other, and growing in your careers simultaneously while addressing various queries and questions,” he stated.
“We worked very closely in terms of leadership”
The former captain of India also spoke about collaborating with Rohit Sharma within the leadership group, emphasizing that their mutual trust has fortified their partnership.
"There is a significant amount of dialogue that occurs between us, and the close collaboration in team leadership has facilitated the exchange of ideas. More often than not, we find ourselves aligned in our instincts regarding various situations. This trust is crucial as we strive to fulfill our responsibilities for the team," he remarked.
The prominent pair has declared their retirement from T20 internationals following India's victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, yet they remain focused on achieving further success together with the national team.
"We have certainly relished our time playing alongside each other, which has allowed us to extend our careers. When we were younger, it was uncertain whether we would have the opportunity to represent India for 15 years. I am immensely grateful for this lengthy journey and the countless memories and moments we have shared, which continue to enrich our experiences," he concluded.
