India's batting star Virat Kohli was unable to participate in the first ODI against England in Nagpur due to a knee injury. This marked his first absence from an international match since January 2022. Nevertheless, Kohli remained a spirited supporter of his teammates from the sidelines as India achieved a convincing four-wicket win.

While India's performance on the field garnered significant attention, a humorous exchange between Kohli and former England captain Kevin Pietersen also delighted fans. A video that circulated on social media captured the two in a lively discussion, with Pietersen laughing heartily at Kohli's playful behaviour.

Additionally, Kohli appeared to show Pietersen his injury by gesturing towards his knee.

India successfully chased down England's target of 249 runs, despite the absence of their star batter. Shubman Gill played a pivotal role, scoring a composed 87 off 96 balls, and forming vital partnerships with Shreyas Iyer (59) and Axar Patel (52).

Their collective efforts allowed India to secure victory with over 11 overs remaining, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

On the bowling side, debutant Harshit Rana made a notable entrance by dismissing Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone. Veteran Mohammed Shami also excelled upon his return, sending Brydon Carse back to the pavilion.

Among the spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed a wicket, while Ravindra Jadeja delivered an impressive performance, finishing with figures of 3-26 in nine overs.

Concerns had arisen regarding Kohli's absence in the opener, but there is encouraging news for Indian supporters. Following the match, vice-captain Shubman Gill indicated that the batting icon is anticipated to be fit for the second ODI in Cuttack on February 11.

Although Kohli had engaged in pre-match drills in Nagpur, his limited mobility suggested he was not at peak fitness.

As India aims for a series victory, Kohli's potential return represents a significant advantage. Fans will be keen to witness the legendary batter's return as the team continues its preparations for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
