Virat Kohli Declares He’s Not Ready to Retire, Yet Selection for England Tour Remains Uncertain

Virat Kohli's tough time in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy has sparked a lot of chatter about his Test career's future. After yet another dismissal while chasing a ball outside the off-stump on the second day of the fifth Test against Australia, Kohli showed his frustration by hitting his thigh and shouting at himself. This pattern of getting out has happened in all eight of his dismissals over nine innings in the series, leading to doubts about his spot in the Indian Test lineup.
At 36, his recent struggles have raised eyebrows about whether he can keep his place based solely on his past glories. Bowlers from various teams have figured out his technical flaws, and Kohli wrapped up the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with just 190 runs, which included a century in the first Test in Perth.
However, PTI reports that Kohli isn't ready to hang up his boots just yet. He’s “in no mood to retire” and is aiming to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Still, there are some worries, especially about his involvement in the upcoming England tour in June. A former national selector mentioned in a conversation with PTI that it “would be very hard for selectors to pick either Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli based on IPL performance or form. They need to play some red-ball cricket before the England tour.”
Is Kohli going to play in any domestic red-ball matches?
Kohli hasn't shown any interest in playing the Ranji Trophy, which kicks off again on January 23, despite all the buzz around it. His Delhi team is set to face Saurashtra in Rajkot, but with India's busy schedule coming up, it looks like he won't have time for any red-ball cricket before the important tour to England.
Right after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, England will be in India for three ODIs, and it’s still unclear if Kohli will be part of that series. Since this will be India's last fifty-over series before the Champions Trophy in February, there's a good chance he’ll be included in the squad.
The Ranji Trophy wraps up in February too, right before the IPL, where Kohli is expected to lead the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. So, it’s going to be tough for him to squeeze in any red-ball games before heading to England.
If he skips domestic matches, his only chance to get some practice with the red ball might be a few India A games before the England Test series kicks off.
