Speculation had arisen regarding Virat Kohli's potential return as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru; however, the franchise officially announced Rajat Patidar as their captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Kohli expressed his happiness regarding this decision. The former captain of RCB and the Indian national team stated his commitment to supporting Patidar and providing the necessary guidance for him to pursue the coveted IPL title.
In a video message during the press conference, Kohli conveyed his congratulations to Patidar, saying, "Rajat, firstly, I want to congratulate you. I wish you all the very best. Thank you for the way you have grown in this franchise and the way you have performed. You have truly earned a special place in the hearts of RCB fans across India, who eagerly anticipate your performances. This recognition is well-deserved. I want you to know that the team and I will fully support you as you step into this role."
Kohli, who captained RCB for nine years and led the team to the finals in 2016—marking only the second time in the franchise's history—chose to step down from his leadership position prior to IPL 2022. The iconic cricketer decided to relinquish his captaincy in both international and franchise cricket to better manage his workload.
Kohli emphasized that Patidar has rightfully earned the opportunity to lead RCB. "Certainly, this is a significant responsibility. I have held this position for many years, and Faf has taken on the role in recent seasons. Being recognized as the individual to advance this franchise is undoubtedly a tremendous honor for you. I am genuinely pleased for you. You have rightfully earned this position, and I am confident you will continue to grow. I have witnessed Rajat's development as a player over the past few years, and he has even had the opportunity to represent India," he remarked.
Patidar was retained by RCB prior to last year's mega auction and possesses experience leading Madhya Pradesh in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI).
Rajat Patidar will consistently prioritize the interests of RCB, according to Kohli.
The 31-year-old player, who joined the franchise in 2022, led Madhya Pradesh to the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year, where they were defeated by Mumbai by five wickets.
In the premier domestic T20 tournament, he was the second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 428 runs in 10 matches with an impressive average of 61 and a strike rate of 186.08, trailing only Ajinkya Rahane.
Kohli encouraged fans to rally behind Patidar, emphasizing his commitment to the team.
"His performance has significantly improved over the past few years, and he has effectively captained his state team. He has demonstrated his capability to lead this remarkable franchise. I wish him the very best and urge all fans to provide him with unwavering support. Stand firmly behind him, as he will always act in the best interest of the team and the franchise. It is crucial for us to unite and support him. Regardless of the circumstances, the team's success is paramount, and we all share the responsibility to contribute to the growth of this exceptional team and franchise. I extend my best wishes to him and send love to all the fans. I look forward to seeing everyone soon and am eager to witness Rajat kick off the season with great enthusiasm."
