‘Virat Kohli Backed Me in Tough Times’: Mohammed Siraj Gets Emotional About Facing RCB
2 days ago | 5 Views
Mohammed Siraj is set to embark on a new chapter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year as he prepares for his inaugural season with the Gujarat Titans (GT), following an extensive tenure with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Having been a key component of RCB’s bowling lineup since 2018, Siraj now faces the task of adjusting to a new team while still holding strong sentiments for his previous franchise and its star player, Virat Kohli.
In reflecting on his experience with RCB, Siraj recognized the significant influence Kohli had on his development, particularly during the challenging early stages of his IPL career.
“Honestly, Virat Kohli has played a crucial role in my career. He supported me during my tough times in 2018 and 2019, even retaining me, which helped elevate my performance. His encouragement has meant a lot to me. Leaving RCB has been quite emotional. I am curious to see what happens when I face RCB. The match is scheduled for April 2,” Siraj shared with ANI.
Siraj’s exit from RCB signifies the conclusion of a notable period for a bowler who ranks as the franchise’s third-highest wicket-taker. Throughout 87 matches, he secured 83 wickets at an average of 31.45, with his best performance being 4/21.
His standout season occurred in 2023, during which he took 19 wickets in 14 matches, boasting an average of 19.74 and an economy rate of 7.50. Despite his consistent ability to provide crucial breakthroughs, the coveted IPL trophy remained elusive for both him and RCB.
Siraj on Titans
Despite experiencing a tumultuous journey with the Bengaluru-based team, Siraj remains optimistic as he trains with the Gujarat Titans.
"My training sessions are progressing well alongside my fellow pacers, and our bowling unit is adept at strategizing and executing plans. I am enjoying the training environment with all my teammates, particularly here at Gujarat Titans," he remarked.
The Gujarat Titans, known for their well-balanced squad, are eager to see Siraj's speed and precision enhance their bowling lineup. The team claimed the championship in its inaugural season in 2022 under the leadership of Hardik Pandya and reached the finals the following year with the all-rounder at the helm.
In contrast, Shubman Gill faced challenges in his initial season as captain, with the team finishing 8th in 2024, securing only five victories out of 14 matches.
