Cricket enthusiasts learned on Wednesday the precise moment Steve Smith announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, as new footage of his exchange with Indian star Virat Kohli gained traction on social media following their encounter in the Champions Trophy semifinal held in Dubai. Australia faced a four-wicket defeat in Smith's final match in this format, allowing India to advance to their third consecutive Champions Trophy final. Smith was the top scorer for Australia in that game, contributing 76 runs off 96 balls.

On Wednesday, Smith unexpectedly concluded his ODI career, a decision that came just one day after Australia was unable to reach the Champions Trophy final under his leadership, as he stepped in for the regular captain, Pat Cummins, during the tournament.

Nevertheless, social media users speculated that Kohli was aware of Smith's decision, which the Australian later confirmed during their brief interaction post-match at the Dubai International Stadium. In the poignant video that surfaced online, fans conjectured that Kohli inquired, "Last?" to which Smith responded affirmatively, "Yes," as the two shared an embrace.

Steve Smith keeps door open for 2028 Olympics appearance

The former captain of Australia will not participate in the team's title defense at the 2027 ODI World Cup; however, he has left the possibility open for a potential appearance at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, as he intends to continue playing in Test and T20 formats.

"It seems to be the appropriate moment to allow younger players to step in," Smith remarked. "It has been an incredible journey, and I have cherished every moment. There have been numerous remarkable experiences and unforgettable memories. Winning two World Cups stands out as a significant highlight, along with the many exceptional teammates who accompanied me on this journey."

"This is an excellent opportunity for others to begin their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, so it feels like the right time to step aside. Test cricket remains my primary focus, and I am eagerly anticipating the World Test Championship final, the series against the West Indies this winter, and then the home series against England. I believe I still have much to offer at that level."

Smith concluded his ODI career as Australia's sixth-highest run-scorer, amassing 5,800 runs in 170 matches at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He was also part of the victorious ODI World Cup teams in 2015 and 2023.

His next challenge will be Australia's effort to defend the World Test Championship title in the final against South Africa at Lord's in June.
