India's unconventional batsman Virat Kohli has affirmed his commitment to the national team, stating that he has no plans to retire. This declaration followed shortly after Rohit Sharma and his team secured victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy by defeating New Zealand in the final match. Although the topic of retirement was not directly posed to Kohli, the former captain took the opportunity to express his future intentions.

In an interview with Simon Doull after India's triumph, Kohli indicated that he would consider stepping away from the game only when he believes the current players are ready to take over and continue achieving success for the nation.

Before addressing Kohli, Doull remarked that whenever the Indian batsman chooses to retire, he does so by entrusting the team to capable successors.

In response, Kohli stated, “Absolutely. As Shubman mentioned, I make it a point to communicate with these players as much as I can, sharing my experiences and insights on maintaining longevity in the sport. I aim to contribute wherever possible to enhance their skills. Ultimately, as is often said, when the time comes to depart, one should leave the team in a stronger position.”

“Our goal is to ensure that when we eventually conclude our careers, we have a squad prepared to compete at the highest level for the next 8-10 years. These players undoubtedly possess the talent and game awareness necessary to succeed, and they have already demonstrated their capabilities with numerous impactful performances. Shreyas has played beautifully, KL has been instrumental in finishing games, and Hardik is a proven match-winner,” he concluded.

‘Wanted to bounce back after tough Australia tour’

Following India's remarkable four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final, Virat Kohli expressed that his team aimed to recover from a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where they lost the five-match series 1-3.

"Initially, our goal was to rebound after a challenging tour of Australia; we aspired to secure a significant tournament victory, and we achieved that. It is an incredible feeling to play alongside such talented young players who are propelling Indian cricket in the right direction," Kohli stated.

"We are more than willing to share our experiences and strive to make a positive impact whenever the opportunity arises. These young players are stepping up significantly, which is a testament to the strength of our team," he added.

Although Kohli had a disappointing final against New Zealand, scoring only 1 run off two balls, he had a noteworthy tournament overall, accumulating 218 runs in five matches, which included one century and one half-century.

"To win titles, which we have been lacking in recent times, the entire team must rise to the occasion in various matches. Throughout this tournament, every player has contributed in some way, and that is why we emerged victorious," Kohli remarked.

"Players have delivered impactful performances, whether with the bat or ball, and it is only through collective effort that a title can be secured. I am truly delighted that we were able to function as a cohesive unit and thoroughly enjoy the experience," he concluded.
