Vinod Kambli recently shared insights into his relationship with Sachin Tendulkar, emphasizing how the cricketing icon supported him during challenging periods. Footage of Kambli surfaced at the inaugural Ramakant Achrekar memorial in Mumbai two weeks ago, revealing that he was not in optimal health. While some observers expressed concern for Kambli's well-being, a segment of fans speculated that Tendulkar, his childhood companion, had not been there for him in his time of need. However, Kambli refuted this notion, affirming that Tendulkar has consistently been by his side. Following Kambli's two heart attacks in 2013—four years after the controversial statement regarding Tendulkar's lack of support—it was Tendulkar who covered the medical expenses.
"I was unwell while driving and suddenly collapsed. My wife acted swiftly and took me to Lilawati Hospital immediately. I experienced two heart attacks. Who even has two? I did. She witnessed everything and was in tears beside me," Kambli recounted during an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel.
"Our friendship dates back to our childhood. Tendulkar's stature grew significantly over the years. He has always been there for me, providing substantial assistance. I underwent two surgeries at Lilawati, and he took care of all the costs—financially supporting me in 2013."
From their days as schoolmates to their collaboration at Sharadashram Vidyamandir, where they forged an extraordinary 664-run partnership, and representing India in the 1992 and 1996 World Cups, Vinod Kambli and Tendulkar have shared numerous experiences. Nevertheless, their bond faced difficulties in 2009 during a reality show called 'Sach ka Saamna,' the Indian version of 'Who Dares Wins,' when Kambli responded affirmatively to the question of whether Tendulkar could have prevented his downfall.

The incident created a rift in their relationship, leading Kambli and Tendulkar to refrain from communication for over three years. Tendulkar notably omitted any reference to Kambli during his emotional retirement speech and did not extend an invitation to his former close friend for a gathering at his residence, which was attended by numerous prominent figures in Indian cricket. In a past interview, Kambli expressed his disappointment, stating that he felt as though his childhood companion had 'forgotten' him.
Nevertheless, their relationship has since improved. Kambli secured a position at Tendulkar's Middlesex Global Cricket Academy, and the two began to feature together in posts on Instagram. However, in 2022, Kambli reemerged after a prolonged absence, revealing that he was facing significant financial difficulties, relying on a monthly pension of ₹30,000 from the BCCI. This revelation once again stirred concern among fans. Despite the challenges, Kambli publicly acknowledged the support Tendulkar had provided him.
The events of 2009, which prompted Kambli's comments about Tendulkar, stemmed from sheer frustration. He reflected, "It was a moment of frustration that led me to say what I did. I recognize that I expressed those feelings, but they did not hold any real significance. Eventually, we resumed our conversations. I reached out to him, and our childhood friendship prevailed."
