Vinod Kambli Agrees to Rehab for the 15th Time Amid Financial Struggles

Vinod Kambli has accepted the proposal from Kapil Dev's 1983 World Cup-winning team and is prepared to enter rehabilitation. Kapil and his teammates have offered their assistance to help Kambli regain stability, contingent upon his willingness to undertake the necessary steps for recovery. Kambli has expressed his gratitude for the support from his former teammate, stating that he feels no fear as long as his family is by his side.
Kambli needs substantial support. He acknowledges that while he is not in dire financial straits, his financial situation is quite precarious. Following a recent health scare, Kambli revealed that his sole source of income, as he disclosed in 2022, is a pension from the BCCI, which amounts to ₹30,000 per month. With two children to care for, Kambli, who has previously undergone rehabilitation 14 times, is willing to attempt it once more if it leads to improvements in both his physical and financial circumstances.
"My situation is poor," Kambli remarked when questioned about his financial status. "However, I must commend my wife for her remarkable handling of everything. [Sunil] Gavaskar was the first to respond to Kapil Dev's offer. I have no reservations about entering rehab, as I fear nothing with my family supporting me. I am determined to complete the program and make a comeback," Kambli shared with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel.
Kambli garnered attention approximately two weeks ago when footage from the unveiling of Ramakant Achrekar's memorial surfaced, showing him in distress, which sparked concerns regarding his health. Fortunately, Kambli has since improved after facing difficulties a month prior. Within a short span of 48 hours, the Indian cricket community rallied to support Kambli, with Kapil's team taking the lead in this initiative.
Ajay Jadeja met Vinod Kambli, Abey Kuruvilla in touch
The 1983 World Cup team was not the sole group to reach out to Kambli. His close friend and former Indian teammate, Ajay Jadeja, also visited him recently, encouraging him to recover. Kambli expressed confidence that if necessary, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would extend their support to him, recalling that earlier this year, the board allocated INR 1 crore for Anshuman Gaekwad's treatment.
"Jadeja is a very good friend of mine. He came to see me and said, 'Come on, get up.' Many people have contacted me recently. Everyone has been concerned," Kambli remarked. "Certainly, the BCCI will assist. Abey Kuruvilla, a former Indian pacer, is associated with the BCCI and has been in communication with me and my wife."
Kambli openly acknowledges that his struggles with excessive drinking contributed to his difficulties, but he has stated that he has abstained from alcohol for some time. This claim has been corroborated by his friend and former First-Class umpire, Marcus Couto.
"No, no. I stopped drinking and smoking six months ago. I did it for the sake of my children. I used to indulge in those habits, but I have moved on from them," Kambli stated.
