Former wrestler Vinesh Phogat, a gold medalist at both the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, has announced her pregnancy with her first child. The 30-year-old, who retired from wrestling under dramatic circumstances following the 2024 Paris Olympics, shared the news alongside her husband, fellow wrestler Somvir Rathee, via their Instagram accounts.

"Our love story continues with a new chapter," the couple wrote on the social media platform, accompanied by an emoji of a baby's foot and a heart symbol. Vinesh, recognized as one of the top wrestlers globally, garnered significant attention after reaching the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics. She achieved a remarkable victory over Japan's Yui Susaki in her opening bout, thereby ending Susaki's impressive 82-0 unbeaten streak, a result celebrated as one of the major upsets of that Olympic year. Vinesh then triumphed over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals, making history as the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for an Olympic final.

The wave of optimism dissipated abruptly the following morning in Indian time when it was revealed that Vinesh had been disqualified, rendering her ineligible to compete for any medals after failing to meet the weight requirement for the gold medal match.

This incident sparked significant outrage within the Indian sports community and the broader global wrestling arena. Following her disqualification, Lopez took Vinesh's place in the final and secured a silver medal, ultimately losing to Sarah Hildebrandt from the USA. According to the regulations set forth by United World Wrestling (UWW), Vinesh was classified in last place. She subsequently appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for a joint silver medal, but her request was denied.

Vinesh later announced her retirement and transitioned into a successful political career, becoming a member of the Congress Party and winning the MLA seat in the Julana constituency during the Haryana Assembly elections.
