The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is currently regarded as the pinnacle of Test cricket; however, the Ashes continues to be recognized as the sport's most significant rivalry, as stated by former England captain Michael Vaughan. The fierce competition of the 2024/25 series highlighted that the rivalry between India and Australia has become one of the most celebrated matchups in the past twenty years. While Vaughan acknowledges that these recent series have been exceptionally engaging, he maintains that the historical significance of the Ashes still places it in a superior position.

“England versus Australia is the greatest rivalry. At present, the most exciting series is Australia versus India,” Vaughan remarked on Club Prairie Fire. “The Ashes rivalry has a legacy spanning 150 years. This modern rivalry has indeed produced the most thrilling series over the last two decades. One could argue that India versus Australia has been the most captivating series to observe, both at home and abroad. It is highly competitive, with unpredictable outcomes. Nevertheless, in terms of rivalry, the Ashes remain the most prominent, enduring for 50 to 60 years.”

Vaughan acknowledged that a significant challenge for the Ashes lies in England's struggle to perform competitively in Australia. The last occasion England secured the Ashes on Australian soil was in 2011, which also marked their last Test victory in the country, as Australia triumphed in the subsequent three series with scores of 5-0, 4-0, and 4-0.

“The issue with the Ashes is that my team has not been able to travel to Australia and compete effectively. We perform admirably at home, which creates a compelling contest. The last two series in the UK have been outstanding, comparable to any series in history.

“However, the challenge for the English team lies in the lengthy 24-hour journey, which has hindered our ability to compete. Thus, in terms of content quality, it has not been comparable to home and away,” Vaughan stated.

The finest competition globally, yet not characterized by the most intense rivalry

Vaughan remarked that India and Australia have consistently demonstrated competitiveness both at home and abroad, establishing a rivalry that currently showcases the finest in Test cricket. However, he noted that this particular series does not reflect that dynamic, as India secured victory in the first Test but subsequently faltered. "While the contests between India and Australia have been exceptionally engaging, both domestically and internationally, it may not qualify as the most intense rivalry. To be candid, India triumphed in the opening match in Perth and performed admirably, but since then, they have been significantly outmatched. Had they lost in Brisbane, the series would have been effectively concluded by now.

"It must be acknowledged that, despite the brilliance of the cricket played in this series, particularly in the last three matches, the competition has largely been one-sided. Australia has gained the advantage and executed some outstanding cricket, while India has struggled to respond effectively. They have managed to make some attempts to retaliate, but they have not succeeded in delivering a substantial counter." Vaughan concluded.
