Varun Chakravarthy Becomes India's Second-Oldest Debutant; Shreyas Iyer Faces Virat Kohli's Return in Second ODI Against England

India implemented two alterations to their playing XI for the second match of the three-match series against England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. The in-form mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy received his debut cap from all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, while Shreyas Iyer retained his position despite the return of Virat Kohli.

Kuldeep Yadav, who had recently returned to international cricket in the Nagpur match following surgery for a sports hernia in October, was rested for the second ODI, allowing Chakravarthy to make his debut. The spinner from Tamil Nadu had impressed the team management with his outstanding performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last month and during the home T20I series against England, where he took 14 wickets in five innings, earning the Player of the Series accolade.

This selection certainly places Chakravarthy in contention for a spot in the Champions Trophy squad; however, as Rohit mentioned in the pre-series press conference, the responsibility lies with the 33-year-old. India has only three days remaining to finalize their squad for the ICC tournament.

At 33 years and 164 days, Chakravarthy became the second oldest Indian to debut in ODI cricket, following Farookh Engineer, who debuted at 36 years and 138 days against England in Leeds in 1974.

Kohli back, Iyer retained

Kohli was unable to participate in the previous match due to a knee injury. However, the former captain of India has been declared fit for the second match.

It was anticipated that Shreyas Iyer would be replaced by the 36-year-old player after Iyer unexpectedly disclosed that he was not in consideration for the series opener, as the team opted for left-handed Yashasvi Jaiswal in the lineup. Instead, Kohli took Iyer's place in the playing eleven.

As a result, Rohit will open the innings alongside Shubman Gill, who batted at No. 3 in Nagpur, while Kohli will occupy the one-down position, followed by Iyer.

Teams:

England's Playing XI: Philip Salt (wicketkeeper), Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (captain), Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood.

India's Playing XI: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy.
