India's spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has experienced a remarkable journey of redemption. His trajectory has shifted dramatically from a disappointing performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup to becoming a pivotal player for the team in the Champions Trophy. During the recent eight-team tournament, the enigmatic spinner participated in three matches, claiming nine wickets, significantly contributing to India's title victory. The 33-year-old has now shared insights into the "dark phase" he endured following the T20 World Cup, revealing that he received threatening calls from individuals urging him not to return to the country.

For those unfamiliar, Varun Chakaravarthy was selected for India's T20 World Cup squad in 2021 after showcasing his talent in the IPL. However, he struggled during the tournament, failing to secure a single wicket and being part of India's notorious 10-wicket defeat against their long-standing rivals, Pakistan.

Varun disclosed that he fell into a state of "depression" after the tournament concluded, feeling he had not lived up to expectations after being chosen for the national team amidst considerable anticipation. He recounted that upon his return to India, some individuals followed him on motorcycles to his residence.

"It was a challenging period for me. I experienced depression because I felt I had not fulfilled my potential after being selected for the World Cup with so much excitement surrounding me. I regretted not taking even one wicket. Following that, I was not selected for three years. Therefore, I believe my return to the team was more difficult than the journey to my debut," Varun shared with Gobinath during a YouTube conversation.

"After the 2021 World Cup, I received threatening calls. People warned me, 'Don't come to India. If you do, you won't be safe.' Some even tracked me down to my home, and at times, I had to hide. Upon returning from the airport, I was followed by individuals on their bikes. I understand that fans can be very emotional," he added.

'Had to change a lot about myself'

Varun Chakaravarthy, who achieved a five-wicket haul against New Zealand during the group stage of the Champions Trophy, remarked that he had to make significant adjustments to his game following the disappointing outcome of the 2021 T20 World Cup. He elaborated on the modifications he made to his daily routine and practice regimen.

In the semi-final of the Champions Trophy against Australia and the final against New Zealand, Varun claimed two wickets in each match. Notably, in the final, he secured the crucial first wicket of Will Young at a time when the New Zealand team appeared poised to post a substantial score.

"After 2021, I had to undergo considerable changes. I revised my daily routine and practice methods. Previously, I would practice with 50 balls in a session, but I increased that amount. It was challenging to do this without any assurance from the selectors regarding my recall. After the third year, I felt as though my chances were lost. However, after we won the IPL, I received the call-up, which brought me immense joy," Varun stated.

"I can hardly believe that so many positive developments are occurring simultaneously. I aspire to elevate my performance further. I have encountered setbacks and understand the harshness of criticism. Yet, when I reflect on those experiences alongside the accolades I am currently receiving, I feel a sense of happiness," he continued.

Recently, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin expressed that Varun deserved the Player of the Tournament award, citing him as the most significant factor in the tournament's outcome.
