Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakaravarthy mimicked Delhi Capitals batter KL Rahul's 'my ground' celebration after KKR triumphed over Chennai Super Kings in an IPL 2025 match at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. Chakravarthy, who represents Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, enjoyed the chance to bowl at his home ground, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 22. Alongside fellow spinners Moeen Ali and Sunil Narine, he confounded the CSK batters, limiting them to their lowest IPL score at home (103/9). The KKR batsmen chased down the target in just 10.1 overs, handing CSK one of their most significant defeats.
Post-match, Varun pointed to the ground and made a circular motion with his hand, indicating it was his territory, just like Rahul did with his bat after leading DC to victory against RCB at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Rahul scored an impressive 93* off just 53 balls, featuring seven fours and six sixes in the IPL clash against RCB.
Following the win, KL, usually composed on the field, was quite animated. He pounded his chest and gestured towards the ground and his jersey, as if to claim M Chinnaswamy Stadium as his own. He was also seen tapping his bat on the ground.
In a video shared by DC, Rahul expressed, "This is a special place for me. This celebration was inspired by one of my favorite movies, Kantara. It’s a little reminder that this ground, this turf, this place where I grew up, belongs to me." As a Karnataka player, KL has spent a lot of his domestic career at M Chinnaswamy Stadium and even played two IPL seasons for RCB in 2013 and 2016.
On the flip side, Varun has played all his cricket at Chepauk. In a video from KKR, the leg-spinner was seen playfully imitating Rahul's celebration with a grin on his face.
Narine stood out as the top bowler for the Kolkata team in the match, taking three wickets while only allowing 13 runs in his four-over spell. He also made a significant impact with the bat, scoring 44 runs off just 18 balls, which included five sixes and two fours. His impressive all-around performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Meanwhile, Chakravarthy picked up two wickets in his four overs, giving away 22 runs. He maintained an economy rate of 5.5 and dismissed Vijay Shankar and Deepak Hooda during his time on the field.
"It was great, and having two left-handers worked in my favor. I aimed to keep it tight and grab a couple of wickets. I managed to get one tonight. Rinku's dive to stop that four really boosted my confidence. I try not to bowl too fast; I give the ball time to spin, and sometimes it skids, sometimes it turns. I focus on maintaining the ball's shape and spinning it. Narine and Varun are fantastic spinners, especially Sunil, who has been doing it for a long time. If I can bowl a few overs at the start and set them up for the middle overs, where they become tough to hit, I’m learning from them and trying to keep pace. The pitch was a bit sticky; you don’t need to spin every ball, just one to create doubt in the batter's mind," Moeen Ali shared during the post-match presentation.
Moeen Ali also had a solid outing with the ball, taking one wicket in his four overs while conceding 20 runs at an economy of 5. He bowled one maiden over and dismissed Devon Conway in his spell.
