India's left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma made history on Tuesday by becoming the second bowler to secure a hat-trick in the U19 Women's T20 World Cup. In her debut match of the tournament, she delivered an outstanding performance, achieving figures of 5 wickets for just 5 runs in her four overs against Malaysia during the Group A match held at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.
Sharma's remarkable achievement occurred in the 14th over of Malaysia's innings, where she claimed the wickets of Nur Ain Binti Roslan, Nur Isma Dania, and Siti Nazwah, marking a significant milestone in her career.
The first hat trick in the history of the U19 Women's T20 World Cup was recorded by South Africa's Madison Landsman, who accomplished this feat in the 2023 edition with figures of 4 wickets for 12 runs against Scotland.
In addition to her hat-trick, Vaishnavi Sharma also took the wickets of Nur Dania Syuhada and Nuriman Hidayah, contributing to the defending champions' impressive performance that saw Malaysia bowled out for a mere 31 runs in just 15 overs.
Alongside Sharma, Aayushi Shukla also excelled with three wickets. Malaysia's score could have been even lower had India not conceded 10 wides during the match.
India chase 32 inside 3 overs
India's opening pair, Gongadi Trisha and G Kamalini, efficiently pursued the target, completing the chase in under three overs. Trisha finished with an unbeaten score of 27, while Kamalini contributed 4 runs.
The entire match concluded in less than 18 overs, marking India's achievement of the second-fastest chase in the history of the U19 Women's T20 World Cup.
With this victory, India ascended to the top of their group, accumulating four points, equal to Sri Lanka. India boasts an impressive net run rate of 9.1, in contrast to Sri Lanka's 5.5.
Following the match, Vaishnavi Sharma expressed, "This was a dream debut, achieving both a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul. My journey has had its share of challenges."
"I admire Radha Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. Last night, I visualized my strategy for taking wickets here," she further stated.
India's next match is scheduled against Sri Lanka on Thursday, January 23, as the team aims for a third consecutive victory.
