One of the significant selection dilemmas for India as they approach the ICC Champions Trophy is determining the optimal spin combination to utilize in the UAE for the 50-over tournament. Kuldeep Yadav was anticipated to be a key asset with his unique left-arm leg spin; however, due to uncertainties surrounding his fitness, India must prepare alternative strategies.

India possesses a roster of economical spinners capable of maintaining control, with Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja leading the charge as dependable left-arm spinners suitable for various conditions. Nevertheless, the team is in search of a dynamic spinner who can serve as a wicket-taking option during the middle overs, providing captain Rohit Sharma with an additional resource on the expansive grounds in Dubai.

One player whose impressive performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy have notably enhanced his prospects is Varun Chakaravarthy. Despite Tamil Nadu's exit from the tournament at the quarterfinal stage against Rajasthan, Chakaravarthy made a significant impact by taking five wickets in a match and concluded the tournament as the leading wicket-taker, claiming 18 wickets across six matches.

Chakaravarthy has been recalled to the Indian national team for the T20I series against Bangladesh following a couple of strong seasons in the IPL. Although he has yet to make his ODI debut and is competing in a different format, his record of over 20 wickets in each of the last two IPL seasons, with an economy rate slightly above 8 against some of the world's top batsmen, stands in his favour.

Varun's varying circumstances lead to distinct outcomes

The significant point to consider is that the last occasion India included Chakaravarthy in a major ICC tournament resulted in a disappointing exit during the group stage of the 2022 T20 World Cup. In the aftermath of that setback, India opted to rely on a revitalized Kuldeep. This time, however, Chakaravarthy benefits from the presence of Gautam Gambhir as India's coach, who has an established rapport with the spinner from their time together at the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Despite facing criticism regarding his leadership in red-ball cricket, Gambhir has demonstrated his acumen in white-ball formats as a coach in the IPL, particularly in effectively managing his spin options. Chakaravarthy has evolved from being merely a mystery spinner; he has developed a reliable stock delivery suitable for flatter pitches, while still retaining his ability to take wickets.

With the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin and a decline in available spin options, Gambhir may discover that the solution to his challenges lies closer than anticipated.
