Uncertainty Surrounds Md Sporting Coach’s Comeback
2 months ago | 5 Views
Kolkata: Mohammedan Sporting is currently uncertain about the return of head coach Andrey Chernyshov, following a statement made by the club’s investor over two weeks ago indicating that the Russian would resume his duties after the away match against Hyderabad FC on February 8. The possibility of assistant coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo continuing in his role for the remainder of the season has not been dismissed by anyone associated with the Indian Super League (ISL) newcomers.
An official linked to the football team mentioned that attempts to reach Chernyshov on Wednesday were unsuccessful. Another source indicated that Wadoo, who joined the coaching staff in December, might remain in charge for the final five matches of ISL11. These officials requested anonymity due to their lack of authorization to communicate with the media.
Currently, Mohammedan Sporting occupies the last position in the 13-team standings, having secured only 11 points from 19 matches, with a record of two wins and 11 losses. The team has suffered defeats in their last three games and is set to face East Bengal on Sunday.
Chernyshov had tendered his resignation on January 29, citing unpaid wages as the reason. He expressed on his social media that, as a professional, he could not continue working for three months without receiving a salary, stating, “I made this decision with tears in my eyes. But all the blame for this lies with the club’s management.”
Later that same day, Dipak Singh, director of BunkerHill Sports, the investor for Mohammedan Sporting since 2020, announced that Chernyshov had reconsidered his decision. He stated that Chernyshov would be returning after the matches against Mohun Bagan Super Giant (February 1) and Hyderabad FC. Singh has not responded to inquiries for further comments.
Under Chernyshov's leadership, Mohammedan Sporting secured their place in ISL11 by winning the 2023-24 I-League.
Officials have reported that a portion of the players' salaries has been disbursed, although approximately two months' worth of salaries remains outstanding. Financial resources for the club were frozen after investors claimed that share transfers had not been completed. On January 29, Singh mentioned that only the final formalities for the share transfer were pending.
