India's U-19 World Cup-winning team of 2008, captained by Virat Kohli, included several talented young cricketers who later distinguished themselves in the sport. Among them, a player who made a significant contribution in the final is set to take on the role of an umpire in the IPL 2025. The announcement has been made that Tanmay Srivastava, an essential member of the triumphant U-19 squad, will officiate in this season's IPL.

Srivastava was instrumental in India's victory against South Africa in the U-19 World Cup final, scoring a steady 46 runs while batting at No. 3. This was the highest score in an innings where India was dismissed for a mere 159 runs in 45.4 overs. Subsequently, the bowlers delivered an outstanding performance, limiting the South African team to 103/8 in a rain-affected 25-over match, resulting in a 12-run victory for India.

Having retired from professional cricket nearly five years ago, Srivastava has been officiating in domestic competitions. The BCCI has now appointed him as an umpire for the IPL, a decision that was officially communicated by the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA).

“A true player never leaves the field—just changes the game. We wish Tanmay Srivastava all the best as he embraces this new role with the same enthusiasm!” the UPCA stated on their official X account.

Notably, Srivastava possesses experience as a player in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played for Kings XI Punjab (currently known as Punjab Kings) during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, participating in seven matches. Unfortunately, his batting performance was underwhelming, as he managed to score only eight runs across three innings.

Nevertheless, despite his challenges in the IPL, he had a commendable domestic career, accumulating a total of 4,918 runs in 90 first-class matches.

IPL begins March 22

Notably, it will be Virat Kohli, the U19 captain of Srivastava, who steps onto the field for the inaugural match of the 18th season. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to travel to Kolkata to face the reigning champions, the Knight Riders, in an exciting season opener.
