Towhid Hridoy made history on Thursday by becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to hit a century against India in ICC tournaments. He achieved this milestone during Bangladesh's opening match in Group A of the 2025 Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Stadium.
In their 41 ODI encounters with India, including seven in ICC tournaments like the World Cup and Champions Trophy, no Bangladeshi player had ever scored a century—until February 20, 2025. Hridoy's impressive innings included five fours and two sixes, and he reached his first international century off 114 balls.
He is now the fifth Bangladeshi to score a century against India in ODIs, but the first to do so in an ICC tournament. Hridoy also became the sixth player in Champions Trophy history to score a hundred against India, joining the ranks of notable players like Chris Cairns, Fakhar Zaman, Shoaib Malik, Andy Flower, and Herschelle Gibbs. Additionally, he is the ninth player to score a century in his debut Champions Trophy innings, and the second for Bangladesh after Tamim Iqbal's 128 against England in 2017, as well as the second non-opener to achieve this feat after Mohammad Kaif.
During his innings, Hridoy formed a remarkable partnership with Jaker Ali, putting together 153 runs. This stands as the highest sixth-wicket partnership or lower in Champions Trophy history and the highest against India in ODI matches.
Hridoy gets hurt
Hridoy hit 96 runs in the 47th over when he suddenly fell to the ground after sending a short ball from Mohammed Shami through the covers. He was hit with intense cramps in his left leg, prompting the team physio to rush over for some help. The game paused for a moment as Hridoy struggled in pain, but he chose to push through and finish the innings, even though he was limping his way to a century. It seems pretty unlikely that he’ll be able to play in the next innings.
