Tomas Machac, having previously triumphed over Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz last year, is once again poised to confront the Serbian champion in a crucial match. The two athletes will meet in the third round of the 2025 Australian Open.

Machac commenced his campaign by defeating Sumit Nagal with a score of 6-3, 6-1, 7-5, followed by a victory against Reiley Opelka in the second round. In anticipation of the upcoming match, Machac remarked, “I will not disclose my game plan.”

“My strategy remains confidential, and one must never underestimate a legend like Novak. He is among the greatest players in history and deserves utmost respect. I will aim to perform at my best and seize my opportunities; then we shall see the outcome. I intend to savour every moment,” he further stated.

In response, Novak Djokovic commented after his second-round victory, “He possesses a remarkable dedication to this sport and provides me with significant tactical insights. He conducts thorough analyses of his opponents, and it is beneficial to engage with him during practices and matches. Our rapport is excellent.”

Currently ranked World No. 7, Djokovic aims to silence his detractors and compete against the emerging generation this year. Last season, he did not secure any Grand Slam titles, managing only to win the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He holds a record of 24 Grand Slam titles, including an unprecedented ten Australian Open championships.

On the other hand, Machac is recognized as the top Czech player and recently claimed the mixed doubles title at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside Katerina Siniakova. In the previous year’s Australian Open, he achieved his first top-20 victory by defeating lucky loser Shintaro Mochizuki and 17th seed Frances Tiafoe.

Machac also overcame Djokovic in the semifinals of the 2024 Geneva Open, marking his first appearance in an ATP Tour-level singles final, where he ultimately fell to Casper Ruud.
