New Zealand secured another decisive victory in their latest match. While the bowlers were instrumental in achieving success in Christchurch on Sunday, Tim Seifert emerged as the key player in the home team's five-wicket triumph in Dunedin on Tuesday, allowing New Zealand to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
In a rain-affected game at the University Oval, which was shortened to a 15-over format, Pakistan set a target of 136 runs. Seifert delivered an explosive performance, scoring 45 runs off just 22 balls, which included five sixes and three fours. He also formed a rapid opening partnership of 66 runs with fellow opener Finn Allen, who contributed 38 runs off 16 balls, featuring five sixes, as New Zealand completed the chase with 11 balls remaining.
Notably, four of Seifert's sixes came in a single over bowled by Shaheen Afridi, where he amassed 26 runs off six deliveries. This occurred during the third over of the innings. On the first ball of the over, which was a length delivery wide outside off, Seifert struck it down the ground, sending the ball over the commentary box and outside the stadium. Afridi followed up with a similar delivery, allowing Seifert to hit another six over cover.
The Pakistan fast bowler then adjusted his line, delivering the next two balls on a different trajectory, resulting in a dot ball and a two-run score. However, Seifert quickly adapted and launched the next delivery over deep mid-wicket for a third six in that over. On the final ball, Afridi bowled a bouncer, but Seifert maintained his composure and sent it soaring over deep square for a fourth maximum.
Salman Ali Agha drew positives despite defeat
Despite experiencing a second consecutive defeat as captain, Salman focused on the positive aspects, praising the performance of Pakistan's fielding and bowling. Nonetheless, he acknowledged the necessity for improvement in the team's batting during the powerplay.
"This match was an improvement compared to the previous one. Our batting was more effective. The fielding was exceptional, and our bowling showed promise in certain phases. We need to adapt to the different bounces. After the powerplay, our bowling was commendable, particularly Haris's performance. However, we must enhance our powerplay as a batting unit, and the same applies to our bowling unit," he stated during the post-match presentation.
