Golf icon Tiger Woods announced on Monday his decision to withdraw from this week's Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, attributing his choice to the emotional impact of his mother's unexpected passing. Woods, who was set to participate in his first non-major PGA Tour event in seven months, disclosed that he is still coming to terms with the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died last Tuesday at the age of 80.
In a statement shared on social media, Woods articulated the difficulty of his decision: “I intended to compete this week, but I am simply not prepared,” he stated. “I made every effort to get ready, knowing it was what my mom would have wanted, but I am still navigating through her loss.”
Woods further conveyed his gratitude for the support he has received during this challenging period. “I appreciate everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and am thankful for the ongoing kindness since my mother's passing,” he remarked.
The 15-time major champion had pledged to participate in the Genesis Invitational, a tournament he hosts, shortly after announcing the passing of his mother. This event was anticipated to be Woods’ first appearance on the PGA Tour since he withdrew from the Genesis last year due to health issues. His most recent official tournament was the 2023 Open Championship held at Royal Troon.
Woods, who has enjoyed a remarkable career at Torrey Pines, was eager to return to the course where he has triumphed eight times, including his memorable 2008 U.S. Open victory, which he secured in a thrilling 18-hole playoff while competing with a broken leg.
Due to the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles, the Genesis Invitational had to be moved from its traditional location at Riviera Country Club and is now taking place at Torrey Pines. Despite his withdrawal, Woods expressed a desire to attend the event later in the week.
Woods’ decision to withdraw was somewhat unexpected, as he had not participated in the PGA Tour since the 2023 British Open. He had intended to return to the Genesis, one of the PGA Tour's premier events, after being granted a special exemption. Jake Knapp has taken Woods' place in the tournament lineup.
Throughout his career, Woods has acknowledged his mother as one of his most significant influences, referring to her as a “force of nature” and the “greatest rock any child could possibly have.” He reminisced about her impact on his competitive spirit and passion for the sport, highlighting her advice to wear red on Sundays, which became his signature look. Her passing represents another profound loss for the golfer, whose father, Earl Woods, died in 2006 after a battle with cancer.
