‘This Will Be My Last T20 World Cup...’: Rohit Sharma on India's Mindset Shift & ICC Trophy Quest

India's performance in the last three ICC events is remarkable. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team has secured victory in 22 out of 23 matches played in these tournaments, with their only loss occurring in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup against Australia. Aside from this defeat, India enjoyed perfect runs in both the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025. Recently, Rohit Sharma reflected on the success that has accompanied his leadership.

India maintained an unbeaten record in the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025, demonstrating their superiority in both competitions. Rohit Sharma openly acknowledged that the team's defeat in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup against England prompted a shift in strategy, ultimately transforming them into a formidable team.

In that semi-final match in Adelaide, India faced a crushing ten-wicket loss to England. Following this setback, Rohit Sharma adjusted his batting approach, emphasizing aggressive intent from the outset. The positive change in the team's performance is now evident and widely celebrated.

"It all began back in 2022 during the World Cup in Australia. Although we did not reach the finals and lost in the semi-finals, we clarified our expectations with the players regarding their performance and style of play," Rohit Sharma stated in an interview with Mumbai Indians.

"We established clear communication with the players, emphasizing the need for freedom to perform without fear. While we experienced some setbacks and lost a few series, we remained calm and adhered to our strategic mindset," he continued.

At 37, Rohit acknowledged the challenges his team has faced in recent years, referencing their Test series defeats against New Zealand at home and Australia away.

"Just imagine if we had won the 2023 ODI World Cup final. To remain undefeated across three ICC tournaments is an incredible achievement."

"So I feel that all the people who played these three tournaments deserve respect. After the T20 World Cup 2024, we had a little bit of a low where we lost a home series and didn't play well in Australia. And then came the Champions Trophy. These nine months were a perfect example of how life is," he added.

'2024 was a low for Mumbai Indians'

In the 2024 IPL season, the Mumbai Indians ended up at the bottom of the points table. The appointment of Hardik Pandya as captain generated considerable controversy, particularly among fans of Rohit Sharma, who were displeased with the leadership change. Consequently, Hardik endured relentless booing at every venue the Mumbai Indians visited.

Rohit Sharma also reflected on the team's performance in the previous season, indicating that his primary focus was on the T20 World Cup, which he anticipated would be his final tournament in the shortest format for India.

For those unfamiliar, Rohit had declared his retirement from T20 internationals following India's victory in the World Cup held in Barbados, where they triumphed over South Africa in the final.

"It was a challenging period for the team, and I felt we did not showcase our best cricket. There were numerous aspects to look forward to after the IPL, especially with the World Cup approaching. I was aware that this would be my last T20 World Cup, so I aimed to make it memorable," Rohit stated.

"I also recognized that achieving success would require the support of my teammates. We came together as a group, and it was encouraging to witness the collective performances from everyone throughout the tournament," he added.

In the IPL 2025 match against the Chennai Super Kings, Rohit Sharma was dismissed without scoring, and he will now aim to make a significant impact against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday, March 29.
