Disbelief swept through the Chidambaram Stadium when third umpire Vinod Seshan upheld on-field umpire Chris Gaffaney's decision to dismiss MS Dhoni. The crowd, along with CSK supporters on social media, anticipated that the ruling would be reversed after a flicker appeared on the Ultra Edge, indicating the ball was near Dhoni's bat. However, after considerable deliberation and reviewing multiple replays, the third umpire concluded that there was no contact with the bat.

He focused on the left side of the screen, indicating a gap between the bat and the pad, which significantly reduced Dhoni's chances of being deemed not out. The Hawkeye technology confirmed that the ball had pitched in line, the impact was in line, and it was indeed hitting the stumps.

This incident occurred during the 16th over of the CSK innings, resulting in Dhoni's dismissal for just 1 run off 4 balls, as he fell victim to Narine. Unsurprisingly, the third umpire faced backlash on social media, with CSK fans calling for an explanation, which was eventually provided by former South African wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher.

Why third umpire gave Dhoni out despite a spike on UltraEdge

"When  During the broadcast, I was somewhat taken aback by the third umpire's decision not to consider the flicker on UltraEdge. It appeared to be quite close to the bat," Boucher remarked during the mid-innings segment on JioStar. The former head coach of the Mumbai Indians mentioned that he received clarification from the broadcasters after leaving the air.

"I was informed that third umpires operate under different criteria. What we observe on the screen is merely the flicker, but the umpires evaluate several elements, such as the nature of the spike, its magnitude, and duration, conducting various assessments prior to the match. Therefore, the third umpire is trained to distinguish between different flickers," Boucher explained.

The flicker detected by UltraEdge can arise from various sources beyond the ball making contact with the bat or pad; it may also pick up the sound produced by the batter's spikes as they move.

In addition to the characteristics of the spike, the split-screen view also worked against Dhoni. While it was challenging to determine if the ball had made contact based solely on the images on the right, the visuals on the left suggested there might have been a slight gap between the bat and the pad.

Dhoni took charge of CSK after the regular captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, was sidelined from the tournament due to a fractured elbow. He has led CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League titles, establishing himself as one of the most successful captains globally.

The exceptional bowling performance from KKR spinners Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Moeen Ali limited the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, to a mere 103 runs for 9 wickets in their 20 overs, marking CSK's lowest score at home in IPL history.

KKR successfully chased down the target in just 10.1 overs, winning by 8 wickets.
