Virat Kohli has been facing some criticism after not performing well in the last two Tests against Australia. He came to Australia following a disappointing home season against Bangladesh and New Zealand, but managed to score a century in the second innings at Perth, which was a bit of a relief. Unfortunately, his form dipped again in the last three innings, where he recorded two single-digit scores and a top score of just 11.
On the bright side, Kohli can take comfort in his past performances at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has racked up 316 runs in three Tests there, averaging 52.66, with one century and two fifties in six innings, which could really help boost his confidence.
Former BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma has set some expectations for Kohli, expressing hope that he’ll hit a couple of centuries in the upcoming matches.
"He’s done so much for us, which naturally raises our expectations. I believe he’ll bounce back. Let’s hope he can score two more centuries in the next two games. I even predicted he’d get three centuries during this series in Australia," Chetan Sharma shared with ANI.
Virat Kohli's latest stats are raising some eyebrows
Kohli's performance has been pretty underwhelming, especially during the first innings. Since the Bangladesh series, he’s only managed to rack up 73 runs over 8 innings, averaging a mere 9.125. His scores have been 6, 47, 0, 1, 4, 5, 7, and 3.
This year, in nine Tests, he’s totaled 376 runs with an average of 25.06, hitting just one century and one fifty across 17 innings.
Kohli still hasn’t figured out how to tackle his ongoing issue of poking at balls outside off stump, which often leads to him getting caught behind.
On the bright side, if he can turn things around and put up a big score at the MCG, he could surpass Sachin Tendulkar and become India’s leading run-scorer there, needing 449 runs to do so. Right now, he sits in third place, with Ajinkya Rahane in second at 369 runs from three matches, including two centuries. Kohli is just 134 runs away from taking the top spot.
