The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly referred to as The Gabba, is slated for demolition as part of the Queensland government's initiative for the 2032 Olympics. A key element of the seven-year plan is the development of a new stadium with a capacity of 63,000 seats, projected to cost AUD 3.8 billion, which will serve as the Olympic Stadium during the Games. Although cricket will continue to be played at The Gabba until the new stadium is completed, it will be dismantled thereafter.

This decision marks the end of an era for one of the most celebrated venues in international cricket, especially in Test matches, where the Australian men's team has established a stronghold over the years. For Indian supporters, The Gabba will forever be remembered as the site of one of the team's most significant victories in Test history. In 2021, a depleted squad led by Ajinkya Rahane ended Australia's remarkable unbeaten streak at The Gabba, which had persisted for over thirty years, securing a second consecutive series win.

"The Gabba has been an exceptional venue for cricket for many years, creating countless memories for fans and players alike. However, the challenges facing the stadium are well known, and we must focus on the future," stated Terry Svenson, CEO of Queensland Cricket.

Cricket Australia has scheduled matches at The Gabba only until the 2025-26 season due to uncertainties regarding its future. "This decision provides us with clarity on venues and scheduling, enabling us to ensure that Brisbane hosts the highest quality international and domestic cricket," Cricket Australia remarked in a statement.

Since 1931, The Gabba has hosted 67 men's Test matches and two women's Tests. Renowned for its lively bounce and pace-friendly pitches, the 'Gabbatoir' has become Australia's most formidable venue, with the home team remaining unbeaten there from 1988 to 2021, most of those matches being the first Test of the Australian summer.
