Mumbai's illustrious batting lineup experienced a significant collapse in their Ranji Trophy Group A encounter against Jammu and Kashmir. Notable players such as India captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shreyas Iyer, who are either established members of the Test squad or potential candidates, were all dismissed with minimal contributions in both innings.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Basit Ali criticized Iyer's dismissal in the first innings, labeling it as the most egregious of the match.

"The most disappointing shot in that innings (Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match) was played by Shreyas Iyer. The team had already lost six wickets, and with the mid-on fielder positioned deep, it was unwise to hit the ball there," Basit remarked on his YouTube channel. "The simplest strategy to dismiss Shreyas Iyer in the Champions Trophy is to place the mid-on back, as he is likely to attempt a big hit."

Iyer managed to score 11 runs off seven balls, opting for an aggressive shot against Yudhvir Singh, which resulted in his dismissal at mid-on. Prior to this, he had hit one four and one six. In Mumbai's second innings, Iyer added 17 runs from 16 balls before being caught behind off Auqib Nabi.

Mumbai's international stars fail to impress

This match marked Rohit's return to domestic cricket after a decade, yet his dismissals mirrored his struggles during the five-Test series in Australia, where he averaged a mere 6.20 across five innings. In the first innings, he scored three runs off 19 balls, while in the second, he hit three consecutive sixes before falling while attempting a fourth, finishing with 28 runs off 35 balls.

Rohit's opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who typically opens for India, managed only four runs off eight balls in the first innings and 26 runs off 51 balls in the second. Mumbai found themselves in a precarious position at 57/7 in the 18th over of the first innings, before Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian provided some resistance.
