Terrifying Moment at Australian Open: Ball Kid Faints During Mixed Doubles Match
2 months ago | 5 Views
The Australian Open 2025 had a pretty intense moment on Sunday when the German-Dutch duo of Tim Putz and Demi Schuurs faced off against the Aussie team of John-Patrick Smith and Kimberly Birrell in their mixed doubles second round match in Melbourne. During the second set, Putz noticed a ball kid who looked like he was about to faint and quickly rushed over to help.
The situation got serious when someone in the crowd yelled, “he’s going to collapse,” prompting Putz to spring into action. He wrapped his arm around the kid just as staff came to assist. A reporter on Channel Nine mentioned, “Unfortunately one of the ball kids is unwell, and that’s really unfortunate.”
Commentator Chris Bradnam added, “There clearly was a little bit of distress. It's been a scorcher of a day, over 30 degrees Celsius. They need an ice pack and some fluids pretty quickly.”
Anne Keothavong mentioned, “It’s not the ideal situation, but everyone is doing their best to lend a hand. Help is on the way, and it’s tough out there for everyone.”
In Melbourne, temperatures soared above 30 degrees Celsius all day. After Putz rushed to assist the child, other players quickly joined in with towels and water. This incident caused a 10-minute delay in the match. Putz-Schuurs ended up losing with scores of 3-6, 7-5, 8-10.
Throughout his career, Putz achieved a top doubles ranking of world No. 7 in 2022 and has claimed ten doubles titles on the ATP Tour, including the 2024 ATP Finals, where he partnered with Kevin Krawietz, making them the first all-German duo to win that title.
John McEnroe also weighed in on the harsh weather in Melbourne, saying, “The conditions are pretty brutal. It’s around 32 degrees Celsius right now, and it feels even hotter on the hardcourt. It’s crucial to get off to a quick start. That’s likely why Draper had to stop playing; the heat affected him, and he was dealing with injuries from those three five-set matches.”
