Tennis Stars React to Jannik Sinner’s Unexpected WADA Agreement

When Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open title this year, many spectators speculated that it might be the last Grand Slam appearance for him in the current season. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was anticipated to deliver a ruling on his WADA doping appeal in April, with widespread expectations of a two-year suspension.
However, by February, Sinner had reached a resolution with WADA regarding the doping allegations, resulting in a mere three-month suspension. This outcome ensures that he will return in time for the French Open, thus allowing him to participate in all Grand Slam events this year.
In a conversation with Clay, Alexander Zverev, who faced Sinner in the Melbourne finals, shared his thoughts on WADA and the contentious agreement. He remarked, “It’s a peculiar situation, as it has been a lengthy process where he was initially cleared, only for WADA to seek a reevaluation. In my view, there are two possibilities.”
“Either you are completely blameless and should not face any suspension. If there is no fault, then there should be no punishment. Conversely, if there is culpability, then a three-month suspension for steroid use seems insufficient. Therefore, it is essential to determine whether it was his fault or not. If it was not his fault, then a three-month suspension is unwarranted; if it was, then the entire situation appears quite unusual. The process and circumstances surrounding this matter over the past year have been rather strange,” he added.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo Musetti, who is in Buenos Aires alongside Zverev for a tournament, also weighed in on the matter. He stated, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am not fully aware of the details, making it difficult to form a judgment. However, I have confidence in the organization and the committees involved in the decision-making process. If the conclusion is a three-month suspension, I don’t believe it significantly alters our perspective.”
He was also inquired about any communication with Sinner, given their shared Italian nationality.
