Australia concluded the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with an impressive six-wicket victory while navigating challenging conditions at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Despite India's strong start to the series in Perth, Australia has demonstrated superior performance in the four subsequent matches, justifying their 3-1 series lead.

Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar extended his congratulations to the Australian team, expressing admiration for their resilience in this contest. Through the social media platform X, Tendulkar commended Pat Cummins' squad for their high-quality play, which enabled them to reclaim the trophy after more than a decade.

“Remarkable performance by Australia to recover from a 0-1 deficit and secure the series 3-1. Congratulations to them on winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” Tendulkar stated on social media.

Tendulkar also acknowledged Jasprit Bumrah, who achieved a record-breaking 32 wickets in the five-match series and was named player of the series for his outstanding contributions. At times, Bumrah appeared nearly unplayable, playing a crucial role in keeping India competitive during key moments, although Australia ultimately did enough to render Bumrah's efforts ineffective.

“Special mention to @Jaspritbumrah93,” Tendulkar remarked. “‘Jas’ is simply the best in the world!”

Jasprit Bumrah and history

During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah achieved the milestone of 200 wickets in Test cricket, positioning himself as the bowler with the highest average among those who have taken at least 200 wickets. He also emerged as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket for the year 2024, culminating in an outstanding individual season.

Bumrah topped the wickets leaderboard, surpassing Pat Cummins, and also captained India to their only victory in Perth. However, concerns regarding his fitness arose towards the conclusion of the series, as the demands of the matches appeared to take a toll, resulting in back spasms that hindered his ability to bowl at full speed in the first innings and prevented him from bowling altogether in the second.

With the BGT now concluded, India will be optimistic that Bumrah can utilize the upcoming break to recover fully for the ICC Champions Trophy, where the team aims to overcome recent disappointments in red-ball cricket and secure a second consecutive ICC title in the men's tournament.
