Tears on the Turf: Jaiswal’s Candid Message to Shaw After IPL Slump

Tears on the Turf: Jaiswal’s Candid Message to Shaw After IPL Slump

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali did not hold back as he provided a blunt assessment of India's young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose recent decline in performance has raised concerns. Drawing comparisons to Prithvi Shaw's faltering career, Basit urged Jaiswal to regain his form before it becomes too late.

Once regarded as the future star of Indian cricket after an impressive 2023, Jaiswal's performance has deteriorated since returning from India's 3-1 Test series loss in Australia earlier this year. He has managed only a single half-century—67 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad—in IPL 2025. The opener for Rajasthan Royals, who was once celebrated for his aggressive style and poise, now finds himself ensnared in a cycle of inconsistency and criticism.

Basit was forthright in his evaluation, suggesting that the young player has lost his competitive edge.

“His appetite for the game has diminished. Jaiswal is not concentrating on cricket. This is my direct message: Cricket can bring you immense sorrow. Look at Prithvi Shaw. Embrace cricket with passion,” Basit stated on his YouTube channel.

As Jaiswal seeks solutions, India's reserve players are thriving. Priyansh Arya of Punjab Kings made headlines by scoring a record-breaking century off just 39 balls against Chennai Super Kings, exemplifying the fearless approach of India's new generation. Similarly, Sai Sudharsan of Gujarat Titans is making an impact, with his recent score of 82 off 53 balls against Rajasthan Royals highlighting his reliability, placing him second in the Orange Cap standings with 273 runs from five matches.

Basit on Kohli, Rohit

The disparity in their circumstances is striking: as Jaiswal finds it challenging to keep up, a new generation of talent is emerging and capturing attention. This situation has further solidified Basit’s belief that the decision made by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to retire from T20 internationals following India's victorious 2024 T20 World Cup was well-timed.

“Rohit and Virat made the correct choice to retire. I initially thought Virat should continue, but ultimately, it was the right decision. India has a wealth of players,” Basit remarked.

Although Rohit has faced difficulties with his form in the IPL thus far, Kohli continues to be a formidable presence in the shortest format. He has accumulated 164 runs in four matches, boasting an impressive strike rate of 143.85, including two half-centuries.
