2 months ago | 5 Views
Indian team manager R. Devraj has departed from the squad following the death of his mother on Sunday morning, as reported by Cricbuzz. Upon learning of the unfortunate news, Devraj promptly travelled to Hyderabad to be with his family. He is currently the secretary of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).
As the team, led by Rohit Sharma, competes in its final league match of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, it is uncertain whether Devraj will return to fulfil his managerial responsibilities. A decision regarding his return is anticipated to be made contingent upon the results of Tuesday’s semi-final.
The HCA expressed its condolences: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our Secretary Devraj's mother, Kamaleshwari Garu. May her soul find eternal peace. Our sincere sympathies go out to Devraj garu and his family."
India facing New Zealand
India took to the field for their third and final Group A encounter against New Zealand, where Shreyas Iyer displayed remarkable composure, scoring 79 runs under significant pressure. Despite his efforts, India could only post a total of 249 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. New Zealand's Mark Henry emerged as the standout bowler, achieving figures of 5 wickets for 42 runs, placing India in a challenging position.
Iyer received valuable support from Axar Patel, who contributed 42 runs off 61 balls, as the duo forged a vital 98-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Hardik Pandya also made a notable impact with a brisk 45 runs off 45 balls, helping India to a more respectable score following a collapse in the top order.
India found themselves in a precarious situation at 30 runs for 3 wickets, with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli dismissed for low scores. Henry accounted for Gill with an lbw decision, while Glenn Phillips executed a remarkable one-handed catch to dismiss Kohli. Rohit, after a promising start, was caught out by Will Young.
Iyer and Axar responded to the early setbacks with careful batting on a sluggish pitch. However, Iyer's pursuit of a century was thwarted when he misplayed a pull shot, resulting in a catch to Young at cover.
KL Rahul, batting at the sixth position, showed potential but was dismissed for 23 runs. New Zealand's disciplined bowling attack, spearheaded by Henry and Mitchell Santner, effectively contained India's scoring. Hardik's explosive hitting was instrumental in propelling the team close to the 250-run mark. Both teams have already secured their places in the semi-finals.
