New Delhi: On Thursday, the Delhi High Court annulled the decision made by the Games and Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) to replace T Praveen Kumar, the Director of Competition (DOC), along with the technical officials appointed by the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) for the 38th National Games of India, currently taking place in Uttarakhand. The court determined that the decision lacked a sound basis.
On January 31, the GTCC of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), which is tasked with overseeing the organization and execution of the National Games in India, sent an email proposing the replacement of 20 technical members and the DOC selected by TFI. This proposal was based on various complaints alleging unethical practices within the federation. The GTCC suggested appointing a new DOC in consultation with them and replacing 50% of the nominated technical officials with qualified individuals.
In reviewing the case, Justice Sachin Datta noted that the decision was based on complaints received by the GTCC on January 28 and January 31, which he found to be merely unsubstantiated allegations lacking substantial evidence.
“None of these complaints are supported by credible evidence and consist solely of vague allegations. It is important to highlight that the complaint dated January 31, 2025, references allegations dating back to 2012. Moreover, no justification has been provided for the replacement of the DOC, who is not among the technical officials and does not participate in adjudicating fixtures,” the court stated.
Furthermore, Justice Datta, in his five-page ruling, expressed that the GTCC's decision stemmed from its unwillingness to acknowledge TFI as the National Sports Federation (NSF) for taekwondo, which contradicts the high court's previous orders recognizing the federation as NSF.
It is worth noting that on December 24, the high court had suspended the IOA's decision from December 20 to conduct trials for selecting athletes for taekwondo until March 28, affirming the federation's right to choose participants.
