Former Indian fast bowler Sreesanth has called on fans and the media to refrain from speculating about the potential retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He expressed his desire for both players to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and strive for a gold medal for India.
Sreesanth's remarks come at a pivotal moment as Kohli and Rohit play crucial roles in India's journey at the Champions Trophy 2025, where they advanced to the finals following a decisive victory over Australia in Dubai on Tuesday.
Since their retirements from T20 internationals after India's triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup, discussions regarding their future in One Day Internationals and Test cricket have been ongoing. With cricket being included in the Olympics in T20 format, Sreesanth believes that Kohli and Rohit should set their sights on this prestigious event in Los Angeles, despite both having already stepped away from T20 cricket.
“Everyone is speculating about Virat Kohli and the possibility of Rohit retiring. I urge them to continue playing. We are destined to win the Olympics, as there is nothing more inspiring than Olympians Virat and Rohit bringing home a gold medal for our nation,” Sreesanth stated in an interview with India Today.
While it is uncertain whether the two will be included in the 2028 Olympic squad, their impact on Indian cricket remains significant. Kohli delivered an outstanding performance in the semi-final against Australia, scoring a crucial 84 runs that secured the team's place in the final.
Team spirit
In addition to supporting Kohli and Rohit for the Olympics, Sreesanth praised the current Indian team's unity, attributing their on-field 'brotherhood' as a vital asset.
“The most commendable aspect of the team at present is their humility and cooperation. The brotherhood evident on the field is, in my opinion, the team's greatest strength,” he noted.
The former pacer also acknowledged head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma for their leadership during the Champions Trophy, asserting that their collaborative approach has been essential in steering the team through this high-pressure tournament.
India has successfully earned their place in the final and is now poised to face the victor of the semi-final match between New Zealand and South Africa. The eagerly awaited final is set to take place on March 9 in Dubai.
